AD&D 1e still has a certain dangerous charm. The rules are half procedure, half archaeological dig, but the table feel is hard to fake: hirelings matter, mapping matters, light matters, and combat is something you try to survive rather than a balanced encounter delivery system.

I would play, especially if everyone agrees up front that the weirdness is a feature and not a bug. The books occasionally read like Gary Gygax lost a wrestling match with a thesaurus, but somehow the machine still runs.
